Mrs. Gassert

Dear Third Grade,

I am originally from the San Francisco Bay Area, and grew up in Portland, Oregon. I came to Washington, DC in 2002 to attend college at The Catholic University of America. There I majored in Psychology with an emphasis in child development.

After graduating from Catholic University I accepted a position as a Federal Contracts Consultant for a firm in downtown Washington, DC. Although I loved my job, I missed working with children.

In 2009 I entered into an intensive Masters of Elementary Education program at the University of Maryland. I taught second grade in a TItle 1 school outside of Baltimore. It was an honor to work with such dedicated staff members, students, and parents!

When outside of school, I enjoy spending time with my husband and dog!

Dear Parents, Students, and Friends,

I am originally from New Orleans, Louisiana but grew up in Kentucky. I went to High School in Harrodsburg, KY, which was the first town settled in Kentucky. I earned a degree in Peace & Global Studies from Earlham College then moved to Portland, OR where I spent the last seven years working as an organizer in different communities, helping people work together effectively.

In my free time I volunteered at the Rock'n'Roll Camp for Girls, which is a program to build girls' self esteem through music instruction and performance. I thoroughly enjoyed working with the children at camp and realized helping children become active, engaged, creative citizens was the highest form of organizing.

In 2011 I entered the DC Teaching Fellows (DCTF) program. I taught 4th grade during summer school at Truesdell Education Campus as part of the program's rigorous Summer Institute. This school year I will continue in the intensive program designed to support new teachers.

When I'm not at school I enjoy spending time with my dog, doing arts and crafts, and learning to make things from scratch, like cheese.
